Originally by: Solarienne I think that the price is perfectly acceptable if they deliver all of the features and provide Ventrilo level quality instead of the TS static/distortion-fest I am forced to endure on ops.
Thats just it though, from all testing and CCP statements we know that audio quality is below or just about on equal with Teamspeak.
If people want to pay for a subpar service when there are cheaper, better options available.. go ahead. I'll stick with Vent, thanks.
Edit: Someone point out these "nice features" to me please. Because so far all I see is pitfalls and negative points. I want to be able to use VOIP, really I do but not with the current audio quality.
You are wrong. The VOIP service that Vivox is soon to provide has better voice quality than TS, Vent, and even your phone. Pure digital quality voice service.
As to the OP. Out of Game voice will be implemented. Without having eve open you can talk to all your corpies "yay"... You also have the ability to call them on their phones or text them... bet you can't do that with Vent...!
For an awesome stickied post with all the information you'd ever want to know about eve Voice Chat please cunsult the thread titled Voice Chat/Vivox *Post-Fanfest Update*!

Originally by: Norris Neophitus Ok poor quality TS and ventrilo is generally due to poor hardware or poor setups.
The price is cheap though im not certain on exact costs $10 a year is it? will be interesting to see if there is an option with GTC's considering the number of people using them lately.
I'd personally prefer to have VoIP bandled in rather than a seperate client for it but unless you get like a 90%+ take up on it i think it will be crap and less fleixble than other options. Also isn't this a crazy idea considering the issues we have with lag right now and this will be just another thing to tie up the cycles and bandwith of our precious new servers.
This feature DOES NOT AFFECT LAG!... It is run on separate servers... Trust me... you can be completely lagged out in eve and still send and recieve voice comms just as if you were in the same room with the people...

-NateÖ
amd obviously the other way around too...
Yeah sure... but going back to the TS/Vent stuff... Voice lag is more likely to happen on a personal comp that powers TS/Vent rather than occuring on Vivox's dedicated super servers...

Originally by: Hllaxiu And what happens then when your eve client is lagged because its single thread is too busy trying in futility to load a POS grid?
That's your own (crappy) comps fault ... there will be NO server lag.

Originally by: Saladin Well if its $10 per account then I will pass. I am not bothered by quality issues on TS and I do use Ventrillo ocassionally. I also like to be able to be doing some logistics duties on my alts while still being in TS in case I am needed.
Its not about the additional cost, but I dont see a reason to pay for something I will seldom use.
You will have 1 voice account that you can use on any char/account.

Originally by: Hertford Can the VoIP be told to use a USB headset for recording and playback, whilst the main client continues to use the main soundcard?
Not currently... This must be changed for even me to subscribe to it... but as it is a pretty important feature I'm sure it will be added before the release.

Originally by: Takigama As for how does it compare to TS/Ventrillo in terms of performance and cost? well, i dont know why people keep saying it sounds better because i dont think it does personally...
The reason it doesn't sound better is because it's running of the test server and not the vivox servers... When it comes down to it... your opinion of the sound quality is... wrong... because factually it will be better.

Originally by: Nate D Future Features OOG Communication
Taken from your thread Nate D, so do tell when is this future feature slated for release ??
Personally i will subscribe to this service as the charge is fairly insignificant HOWEVER during ops i will continue to use vent, Ouf of game comms is vital considering the number of CTD's,LAG crashes, node crashes etc etc that occur when travelling around in a gang. Im not referring to myself just with what i have seen in my time in eve.
I still cannot fathom how Out of Game comms was left out of this release, surely they want they community to adopt this feature and a great way would be to provide a replacement to ts/vent aswell as all the new nify kewl gang features.
To often i hop onto vent to find out whats going on or just chat in general, and what about those long extended ops where everyone logs for an hour to grab food ?? am i going to have to resort to using MSN to communicate with my gang mates so we can co-ordinate and get going again without leaving people behind.
The idea is great, however it still lacks that grab factor!!!
And talking like a minmatar slave dog is not a grab factor for me.
I do not know, I wish I did. If I find out a schedual for future features I'll be sure to let you know.

probably be quicker just to say "where are you?" than it is to check the map anyway.
Everyone can just join your Teamspeak server. Woot give us the IP....

Originally by: Allen Deckard kinda funny things I can see as a disadvantage.
We run a ts server we had a member once that that seemed very nice on type. We let him on ts. OMG most people quit logging into ts because of this single person being so irritating.
Drunks, Cant tell me on a sat night some of your friends you wouldn't mind not hearing their chatter. hehe
Local voice? OMG imagine the smak talk. Again local imagine jita. if you want to move people out of the core systems local voice would take care of that hehe
Trade voice chats? Dont even wanna go there.
Imagine how large your mute list is gonna be :)
Kids in the house? Well mutes will help this but at times not before the damage has been done.
OH well. I'll probably get it. I see advantages. Wonder if it's gonna work though with ts running in the background will be currious about that. With our group we have friends that log on to our ts frequently that don't and never have played eve but are still good friends and me nor my circle of friends will give that up.
Kids... You can't control what people say on TS either.
Local smack... don't join local voice if you don't want to hear it.
Drunks, anoying people, little kids... I completely understand You could always make a channel just for you and your friends... I have 1 of those it spans multiple corps and alliances... it's great!

So how does it differentiate which character, when your using multiple charcters?
It doesn't have to know which character you're using because it's whatever character is currently logged into the voice account.

I've just realised that this nerf's piracy...AGAIN.
Is the chat channel is Constellation wide, and you attack someone, all they have to do is scream over the Vivox service and all their mates within a 3 jump radius pile on the hapless pirate.
Also, what if you do get off a successful gank on someone...is there an option to mute them? Lets be honest here, some people can use a constant stream of harsh words, that you might not want to bother listening to.
How also are you going to filter out racist remarks, slurrs, and generally foul launguage over a voice channel?
a. You can not voice chat in constelation. And yelling "Pirate!" by typing has been done since the begining.
b. If you don't want to hear the person you ganked smacking you then don't join a channel that they're in.
c. Foul language is not filtered in text chat either. And filtering live audio would be pretty hard.

Originally by: evistin I am not being mean, I am being realistic, no matter how many features the voice system has, it can't beat the sheer flexability of TS and vent in the long run.
If EVE voice can do everything that TS/Vent can do... and a lot more... And it takes out all the hassle that goes with TS/Vent... How is it any less flexable? Your logic understand I don't...

Wait you guys sell ice cream in the winter? Around here everything remotely ice cream related closes
Yeah... when it first starts to get cold the business is dead... but just before Christmas we get a lot of gift card people coming in... and then about mid-Jan people start missing their ice cream fix... and...well... we get REALLY busy again. And it stays like that untill next fall when it gets cold again. --- Voice Chat/Vivox *Post-Fanfest Update* Still waiting for CCP to hire me...! Don't worry... SoonÖ |
